Sir Anthony van Dyck (Dutch pronunciation: [vɑn ˈdɛi̯k], many variant spellings; 22 March 1599 – 9 December 1641) was a Flemish Baroque artist who became the leading court painter in England, after enjoying great success in Italy and the Southern Netherlands. This lively head study was used van Dyck for the head of Saint Anthony in his Vision of Saint Anthony of Padua, a major altarpiece thought to have been commissioned the Infanta Isabella for her Palace Chapel, and now in the Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan (fig. 1).The altarpiece is generally dated to 1629, shortly after van Dyck's return to Antwerp from Italy. It was destroyed in the French bombardment of Brussels in 1695. Its composition is known from a grisaille sketch in the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, which Van Dyck prepared to show how he planned to lay out the work. This sensitive portrait of a young girl – whose identity remains tantalizingly unknown – is a recent addition to Sir Anthony Van Dyck’s oeuvre and is a superb example of his skills as painter of children. During the seventeenth century Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599–1641) was celebrated as a master of portraiture. The Royal Collection holds an exceptional collection of works van Dyck, of which this formal portrait of Charles I (r.1625–49) on horseback is perhaps the most enduring. The vast painting captures the grandeur of the Stuart court and the magnificence of the King who is depicted Portraits (1613–1632) Between 1613 and 1632, van Dyck travelled all over Europe – from his native Antwerp (where he began working as a painter, initially under Hendrick van Balen and later with Peter Paul Rubens), to England for a brief stay at the court of James I and then to Italy, where he had the chance to get to know the old masters. He then finally settled back in Flanders. Magistrate of Brussels is an unfinished oil painting or oil sketch Anthony van Dyck, rediscovered in 2013 after being shown on episodes of the BBC television programme Antiques Roadshow. The work was purchased for £400 from a Nantwich, Cheshire, antiques shop some years previously Father Jamie MacLeod and hung in the Whaley Hall Ecumenical Retreat House, which he runs, at Whaley Bridge. Anthony van Dyck's early paintings of Saint Sebastian allowed the painter to propose an analogy between the martyrdom of the saint and the practice of posing models in the studio. He used disguised self-portraiture to identify not with the artist but, rather, with the model. On the one hand, Van Dyck's Sebastian paintings declare the young painter's commitment to life study.
